The ThinkPad T and X Series laptops were inspired by the need to incorporate the latest technology while retaining the traditional ThinkPad DNA of simplicity and reliability. The design team, primarily based in Yokohama, Japan, spent between 13 to 24 months to bring this vision to life, with the laptops launched in 2018.
These laptops stand out in the market due to their unique properties. They are MIL spec machines, enhanced with traditional rich stroke (1.8mm) keyboards that are spill-proof. A higher level of security is provided by a physical closure mechanism that blocks the user-facing camera. The laptops reflect the latest technology while retaining the ThinkPad DNA of simplicity and reliability.
The realization of this design was achieved through the use of high-quality carbon fiber and magnesium alloy, which allowed for thinness while retaining strength and durability. For RF connectivity, magnesium alloy and glass fiber reinforced plastic were used to create an invisible “window.” Utilization of die-cast and CNC technology minimized gaps, reducing the overall device size. The result is a perfect balance of portability and solid construction for the compact business laptop.
Research was a crucial part of the design process, with the team focusing on identifying customer pain points regarding daily usage, such as efficiency and privacy. The study results indicated that having a quick attachment to a dock to broaden connectivity and a power source was a priority. To achieve this on a low-profile body was a challenge, but the solution was to apply a single unified side dock connector design. To ensure privacy, a physical shutter was integrated over the camera, giving the user peace of mind.
The design process was not without its challenges. With the competitive laptop market becoming ever more challenging with thinner body profiles, applying the standard ThinkPad dock connector on the bottom of the units was not feasible. The application of a unified side dock connector was the solution, however, it created a new challenge with the physical attachment to the dock. New mechanisms and components had to be designed and engineered, as well as thorough user experience studies applied. Adding a physical camera shutter was also challenging in that space is very limited. It had to be ultra-thin, but the shutter sliding mechanisms cannot be moved by accident or obstructive for the user in any way.
The ThinkPad T and X Series laptops are a testament to the innovative spirit of the Lenovo Design Group. Their commitment to addressing user needs and pushing the boundaries of design has resulted in a product that is not only functional and reliable but also sleek and modern. This design has rightfully earned them the Golden A' Digital and Electronic Device Design Award in 2018, a prestigious recognition granted to marvelous, outstanding, and trendsetting creations that reflect the designer's prodigy and wisdom.
